'Bad egg' gas may harbour blood pressure cure
London, October 24 ANI: American scientists have revealed that a gas released by bad eggs, known as hydrogen sulphide, acts as a muscle relaxant to regulate blood pressure in certain animal cells. While hydrogen sulphide can be fatal for humans, several studies have shown that it can put mice into a state of suspended animation, and help limit the damage caused by a heart attack.Sol Snyder and his colleagues at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland, say that they have identified the enzyme that produces this gas in tissues that help to control blood flow in mice. With a view to determining the function of the enzyme called CSE, the researchers genetically engineered mice to lack the gene to make CSE. "You knock out CSE and you stop making hydrogen sulphide in every bit of the body except the brain," Nature magazine quoted Snyder as saying. The researcher said that the first thing the team observed in mice that were not making hydrogen sulphide was high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. They ruled out other possible reasons for high blood pressure in the mice, such as kidney damage or missing enzymes that produce other chemicals to regulate blood pressure. The team also tested smooth-muscle tissue in the blood vessels of mice that did not have the gene for CSE, and found that muscle relaxation in those mice was "markedly impaired" compared with tissue from normal mice.Matt Whiteman at the Peninsula Medical School, University of Exeter, UK, whose research measures hydrogen-sulphide levels in patients with diabetes-related hypertension, hailed this research as the first one to show that removing CSE could make blood pressure go up. "This is fantastic news for people like me working in the field," he said. Anticipating the therapeutic applications of the team's findings, Snyder's colleague Rui Wang, from Lakehead University in Ontario, Canada, said: "It would be a good idea to screen people with hypertension for abnormalities in the CSE enzyme."Wang also said that other diseases like atherosclerosis 'hardened' arteries, heart failure, or diabetes-related heart problems might also be treated by tackling the body's hydrogen-sulphide system.A research article on the study has been published in the journal Science. Artist Paritosh Sen dead
NAT1 National/Art Artist Paritosh Sen dead Kolkata, Oct 23 IANS Paritosh Sen, one of the founders of the contemporary Indian art movement, died at a private hospital here Wednesday following a lung infection, family sources said. He was 90. The artist, who was admitted to hospital one-and-a half months agp, is survived by his wife. The couple did not have any children. Born on Sept 24, 1918, in Dhaka, Sen was a founder member of the Calcutta Group, an art movement established in 1942 that played a significant role in the birth of Indian modern art. A contemporary of greats like M F Hussain, Sen was fascinated by the world of nature, colour and movement and fled home to join the Madras Art School headed by Devi Prosad Roy Chowdhury after completing his school education. After a teaching stint at the Daly college in Indore, Sen formed the Calcutta Group along with his friends, before leaving for Europe in 1949 for further studies in painting. In Paris, he attended the Andre Lhote's school, Academie Grand Chaumier, Ecole des Beaux Arts and Ecole des Louvre, and a meeting with Picasso left a deep impression on him. Presidential debate drew only adequate audience
Washington, Oct.17 ANI: The third and final presidential debate between Senators John McCain and Barack Obama Wednesday night did not draw a landmark viewing audience. n adequate audience is more likely, reports the Washington Times.Overnight ratings in the nation's top 56 local television markets was 38.3 rating points, according to Nielsen Media Research. One rating point equals 1 percent of the total TV audience in a given market - essentially, 38 percent of the viewers in those areas were tuned in. In comparison, the second debate last week received 42 rating points while their first bout received 34.7.The 90-minute exchange Wednesday drew the largest audience in Baltimore, followed by Washington, St. Louis and Richmond. Viewers in New Orleans, Los Angeles and Sacramento, Calif., had the least interest, Nielsen found. But it was "Joe the Plumber" - one Joe Wurzelbacher of Ohio - who rattled the press into attack mode. Granted, the instant cultural icon gave multiple print and broadcast interviews and held a press conference following his unintentional debut on national television Tuesday. When Obama stopped in his neighborhood, the beefy plumber asked spare but cogent questions, later referenced by McCain in mid-debate, prompting some pundits and strategists to designate him a "Republican hero." For better or worse, the New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Associated Press, ABC, CBS and other news organizations quickly investigated Wurzelbacher's tax records, professional licenses and work habits.Americans could be sighing with relief now that the presidential debate rite is over. A CNN/Opinion Research survey of 620 adults who watched the debate on Wednesday revealed that 67 percent were just plain done with debates. "Three is enough," the respondents said. ANI
